Indirect Restorations: Crowns, Bridges, Veneers, Inlays and Onlays

Crowns

A crown will normally be indicated to protect a tooth that may be severely decay, has a crack or a large restoration. Your dentist will have to remove enough tooth structure to create clearance in between upper and lower teeth and create a path of insertion to allow the crown to have retention and be thick and strong enough to receive bitting forces. Sometimes they can be used to achieve better cosmetics and teeth positioning, improve the shape and color of the teeth.

Using all porcelain crowns helps the restoration look more natural, avoiding metal stains on the gums or showing the metal collar of the crown when smiling. Also they have translucency which gives them the appearance of a natural tooth by mimicking it.

Bridge

A bridge is when two crowns are connected where there is a tooth missing in between them and the bridge closes and replaces the gap done by the missing tooth. A fixed bridge goes cemented permanently in and it can’t be removed, unless it is done by your dentist. The main disadvantage of having one is training yourself to floss and clean underneath it. Your dentist and hygienist will show you what to use and how to do so to keep your bridge and gums clean.

This is a fast and cosmetic way to replace missing teeth.

Using all porcelain bridges helps the restoration look more natural, avoiding metal stains on the gums or showing the metal collar of the crown when smiling. Also, they have translucency which gives them the appearance of a natural tooth by mimicking it.

Veneers

Veneers are porcelain restorations that are created with minimal tooth removal and then cemented in. They are a great cosmetic solution to achieve a better shape or color when indicated.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays are indirect restorations done when the restoration needed is mid-sized and involves areas of the tooth that would not be restored with a composite restoration due to the biting forces.

Using all porcelain inlays and Onlays helps the restoration look more natural, avoiding metal stains on the tooth or showing when talking or smiling. Also, they have translucency which gives them the appearance of a natural tooth by mimicking it.
